“What a line up!” was the reaction heard from the Judges table at the 2019 Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Tauranga Regional Finals last month. The four leading business people came to Basestation coworking space to judge to business pitches from year 12 and 13 students. They left with a new level of faith in young people and their ability to lead.
The pitch from Team Bumble at the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) 2019 Finals and Awards night was far from confused or indistinct. Clear, vibrant and full of energy the team from Otumoetai College demonstrated the early success of their plan to rid the world of soft plastic food wrap. Bumble is the YES Regional Winner 2019 and will go on to represent the region at the gala finale on December 4 in Wellington.

Before this weekend, never in my life had I participated in a Startup Weekend. I’d seen the Tauranga one being promoted for a number of years now and every time I saw it I was interested but for every reason under the sun, I’d never shown up to one.
A group of Bay of Plenty college students have earned national recognition by developing and selling thousands of dollars worth of educational cards. They say the experience of building a business has been priceless - and a big opportunity could be in their future.
Put 55 entrepreneurs, developers, and designers together in one room and they'll establish a Startup Enterprise in 54 hours (with mentors, tools, food and stationery provided of course)!
